Donald McCullough: Holocaust Cantata
Samuel Barber: Agnus Dei

The Holocaust Cantata, is scored for solo cello, piano, narrators, and chorus. The texts are English translations of Hebrew poetry and prose found in concentration camps after World War II. While some cantatas have a story line, or plot, the Holocaust Cantata instead offers a sequence of glimpses into the circumstances of individuals. Though not a work that one can “enjoy” in the normal sense of the word, we believe it is a powerful artistic expression that it is important for people to experience. In the composer’s words, it may “transform statistics into people in the minds of the Cantata’s listeners, and perhaps be a part of making it more difficult for such a horror ever to occur again.” Fittingly, the concert concludes with the Chorale singing the famous music of Barber’s Adagio for Strings, to which he set the prayer for peace, the Agnus Dei.
